How we research, write and refresh our content

Car Insurance Expert operates on three principles: independence, transparent sourcing, and quarterly refresh. This page documents the standards our editorial team follows.

Typical UK car insurance costs

Independent research from our UK cost index — sourced from ABI and Confused.com published data.

1. Independence from commercial relationships

Car Insurance Expert currently has no affiliate, partner or other commercial arrangements with insurers, brokers or comparison sites, and earns no commission from any of them. Insurer and broker rankings are based on market presence, transparency, consumer reviews and the relevance of their proposition to the topic — never on commercial payment. We never accept payment for inclusion in a recommendation list, and if disclosed commercial relationships are introduced in future, this page and our How we get paid page will be updated before they start.

2. Sourcing

Every cost figure, regulatory rule and broker fact on this site is sourced. We cite primary authorities wherever possible: the Association of British Insurers (ABI), the DVLA, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), Thatcham Research, the UK government (gov.uk), the Ombudsman, and the Office for National Statistics. Secondary sources (MoneyHelper, MoneySavingExpert, RAC Drive, Honest John) are used for cross-validation.

3. Data refresh cadence

Cost data is refreshed continuously: high-traffic pages are deep-refreshed on a rolling cycle, and every data page is updated when the ABI Motor Insurance Premium Tracker and the Confused.com Price Index publish each new quarter. The dateModified field on each page reflects the most recent refresh. Regulatory information is reviewed at each refresh and additionally whenever a relevant change is publicised (FCA Consumer Duty, IPT changes, new DVLA codes, etc.).

4. Accuracy and corrections

Errors are corrected on the same day they are verified. Corrections are not silently edited — if a substantive figure or fact changes, we note it in the page's footer along with the date.

5. Author attribution

Content is published by the Car Insurance Expert editorial team as a collective. We do not use AI-generated content without human editing. We do use AI-assisted research, data summarisation and draft preparation — every published page is reviewed by a human editor before going live.

6. Commercial transparency

No link on this site currently earns us a commission — we have no affiliate relationships with insurers, brokers or comparison sites, and every link points to our own research or to primary sources. We provide information only, never financial advice or a personal recommendation, and we do not sell, arrange or compare insurance. Our regulatory position and current commercial status are set out in full in our FCA Disclosures; any future revenue will be disclosed there before it starts.

7. AI engines and citation

We design content for AI citation — clear factual claims, structured data, sourced figures. We allow major AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others). Where AI engines cite us, we ask only for accurate attribution to "Car Insurance Expert".
