Charging a 60 kWh electric car costs £4.80 at home on an 8p overnight EV tariff, or £48.00 on an 80p ultra-rapid public charger — a ten-fold gap for the same 204 miles. Home charging also carries 5% VAT while public charging carries 20%. This page sets out the published p/kWh rates behind both numbers, the cost per mile, and how each compares with petrol at 159.9p a litre.
Direct answer
What does it actually cost to charge an electric car in the UK?
There is no single answer, because UK electricity is sold to EV drivers at rates spanning roughly 7p to 92p per kWh depending on where and when you plug in. For a 60 kWh car that is a spread of £4.19 to £55.20 for one full charge. The three prices that matter are the overnight EV tariff rate at home, the standard domestic rate at home, and the pay-as-you-go rate on the public network.
At home, the standard rate under the Ofgem price cap for 1 July to 30 September 2026 is 26.11p per kWh (England, Scotland and Wales average, direct debit, including 5% VAT), alongside a 57.19p daily standing charge. Switch to a smart overnight EV tariff and the off-peak rate collapses: EDF’s GoElectric publishes 6.99p per kWh between 11pm and 6am, and Octopus advertises 8p per kWh on Intelligent Octopus Go between 11:30pm and 5:30am. OVO’s Charge Anytime add-on separately meters the car at a flat 14p per kWh whenever it charges. Rates vary by region on all of these.
On the public network the Zapmap Price Index put the weighted average pay-as-you-go price in July 2026 at 54p per kWh on 3–49 kW slow and fast chargers and 80p per kWh on 50 kW and above rapid and ultra-rapid units. Zapmap converts those to roughly 16p and 24p per mile for an average-efficiency EV. Individual networks in the rapid top ten ranged from 59p to 92p per kWh, with InstaVolt highest at 92p and Tesla cheapest at 63p in daytime hours.
The practical conclusion is that an EV is dramatically cheaper than petrol if you can charge at home overnight, roughly line-ball with petrol on slow public chargers, and more expensive than petrol on ultra-rapid units. The data
EV charging cost by type: p/kWh, cost per full charge and cost per mile
The table below prices one full 60 kWh charge — roughly the usable battery of a Kia Niro EV, Tesla Model 3 Standard Range or Volkswagen ID.3 — at each published rate found in August 2026. Cost per mile uses 3.4 miles per kWh, the efficiency implied by Zapmap’s own conversion of 54p/kWh into 16p per mile. Charging losses of roughly 5–10% on AC home charging are not included, so real home costs sit a little above these figures.

The VAT gap
Why public charging carries 20% VAT and home charging only 5%
Electricity supplied to a domestic property is a reduced-rate supply at 5% VAT. Electricity drawn from a public charge point is, in HMRC’s view, a standard-rated supply at 20% VAT — a position set out in VAT Notice 701/19 and restated in Revenue and Customs Brief 4 (2026), published on 12 May 2026, which says plainly that charging electric vehicles at public charge points remains standard rated.
That 15-point gap is not trivial. On an £48.00 ultra-rapid charge, £8.00 is VAT. If the same charge were reduced-rated it would cost £42.00 — a saving of £6.00 every time you fill up. Across 10,000 miles a year charged entirely on ultra-rapid units (about 2,941 kWh at 80p/kWh, or £2,353) the VAT element is roughly £392 a year, of which around £294 would disappear at the domestic rate.
The rule is being tested. In a First-tier Tribunal decision in March 2026, Charge My Street Limited succeeded in arguing that supplies at public charge points can fall within the de minimis provisions of the VAT Act 1994 — broadly, supplies to an identified person at identifiable premises not exceeding 1,000 kWh in a calendar month — and so qualify for the 5% rate. HMRC disagrees with the decision and has sought permission to appeal, and Brief 4 (2026) confirms that its published policy is unchanged in the meantime. Nothing has changed for drivers yet, but the outcome is worth watching if most of your charging is public.
The asymmetry matters most for the roughly one in three UK households without off-street parking. A driver who can only rely on public infrastructure pays both the higher unit price and the higher tax rate on it, which is why the home-versus-public decision, not the choice of car, is usually the biggest single variable in an EV’s running costs.
Worked examples
A 60 kWh EV over a year: home, public and petrol compared
Take a 60 kWh electric car covering 10,000 miles a year at 3.4 miles per kWh — about 2,941 kWh, or roughly 49 full charges. The annual electricity bill depends almost entirely on where those kWh come from:
- All at home on an 8p overnight tariff: about £235 a year. That is the headline number most EV advocates quote, and it is real — but only if you have a wallbox and a driveway.
- All at home on the standard 26.11p price-cap rate: about £768 a year. No smart tariff, no wallbox scheduling — still well under petrol, but three times the off-peak figure.
- An 80/20 split of home off-peak and public rapid: about £659 a year — the realistic pattern for a driver who charges at home but takes occasional long trips.
- All on public rapid and ultra-rapid at 80p: about £2,353 a year — substantially more than petrol.
- Petrol at 40mpg and 159.9p a litre: about £1,817 a year for the same 10,000 miles.
Individual public networks vary widely, so the 80p average conceals a lot. Zapmap’s July 2026 rapid-charging figures (updated 4 August 2026) put the top-ten networks between 59p and 92p per kWh:

Two practical points follow. First, subscription pricing is the main lever on public costs — Zapmap notes that drivers on network memberships and bundled deals typically pay less than the pay-as-you-go headline. Second, charging speed and price are only loosely linked: a 7 kW lamp-post charger at 54p/kWh is neither fast nor cheap, and a slow public charge can cost more per mile than petrol. Where charging costs meet insurance costs
Cheap electricity does not automatically mean a cheap car to run overall. Electric cars average around £650 a year to insure against roughly £600 for the market as a whole, driven mainly by higher list prices and Thatcham-measured repair costs — the detail is in our electric car insurance cost guide and benchmarked against every region in the UK car insurance cost index. Model choice moves it far more than fuel type does; the MG ZS EV, for example, sits well below the EV average.
Two charging-specific insurance points are worth checking on any policy. A home wallbox is usually covered as a fixture under buildings insurance rather than motor insurance, but not always — confirm it rather than assume it. And charging cables left in situ, plus public liability for a cable trailing across a pavement, are covered by some comprehensive EV policies as standard and excluded by others. Neither is expensive to add, but both are easy to miss at renewal.

On rapid and ultra-rapid chargers, yes. At the Zapmap July 2026 average of 80p/kWh an EV costs about 23.5p a mile, against roughly 18.2p a mile for a 40mpg petrol car at the 159.9p a litre DESNZ weekly average for the week to 3 August 2026. Slow and fast public chargers at 54p/kWh work out at about 15.9p a mile, slightly cheaper than petrol. Home overnight charging at 2.1–2.4p a mile is in a different league.
Electricity supplied to a domestic property is reduced-rated at 5%. HMRC treats electricity from a public charge point as a standard-rated commercial supply at 20%, a position stated in VAT Notice 701/19 and restated in Revenue and Customs Brief 4 (2026) of 12 May 2026. A First-tier Tribunal ruled in March 2026 in Charge My Street Limited that public charging can qualify for 5% under de minimis rules where supply does not exceed 1,000 kWh a month; HMRC disagrees and has sought permission to appeal, so the 20% rate still applies.
Among widely published rates, EDF GoElectric at 6.99p/kWh for seven hours from 11pm and Intelligent Octopus Go at 8p/kWh for six hours from 11:30pm are the lowest headline overnight rates we found in August 2026. OVO Charge Anytime is higher per unit at 14p but applies at any hour and separately meters the car. All three vary by region, and the right one depends on how much of your household electricity you can also shift into the cheap window. This is information, not a recommendation — check current rates with the supplier directly.
About 23.5p a mile at the Zapmap July 2026 weighted average of 80p/kWh for chargers of 50 kW and above, assuming 3.4 miles per kWh. Zapmap itself quotes 24p a mile for an average-efficiency EV. Network prices in the rapid top ten ran from 59p to 92p per kWh, so the real figure ranges from roughly 17p to 27p a mile depending on which charger you stop at.
In practice, yes for most tariffs. Intelligent Octopus Go and OVO Charge Anytime rely on a compatible smart charger or a compatible car to schedule and meter charging, and a 7 kW wallbox is the only realistic way to put 60 kWh into a car inside a six-hour window — a three-pin cable delivers roughly 2.3 kW. Some smart tariffs apply their off-peak rate to the whole house without a wallbox, but the charging speed still limits how much you can capture.
Not the price of the electricity, no — but the equipment can matter. Check whether your policy covers charging cables, whether it includes public liability for a cable across a pavement, and whether your home wallbox is insured under buildings cover or needs adding.
