A UK electric car service costs £227.95 on Kwik Fit’s published 2026 menu, against £243.95 to £268.95 for the equivalent petrol full service — a saving of roughly £16 to £41 a visit, and considerably more once you count what the EV never needs. There is no oil, no filter, no spark plugs and no cambelt, and the RAC puts total service, maintenance and repair costs up to 23% lower over three years and 60,000 miles. The catch is tyres: heavier cars chew through them, and Parkers’ three-year modelling has EV owners spending £915 on tyres against £614 for petrol, which claws back most of the servicing win. How much does it cost to service an electric car in the UK?

Budget £150 to £250 for a routine EV service at a national chain or a competent independent, and £250 to £400 at a franchised dealer on a premium marque. The single cleanest like-for-like comparison available in 2026 is Kwik Fit’s own published price list, because it quotes both fuels from the same menu, at the same centres, inclusive of parts, fluids, disposal and VAT: an EV service is £227.95 flat for any electric car, while a petrol full service runs £243.95 up to 1400cc and £268.95 for 1401–2000cc. Same garage, same labour rates — the electric car is between £16 and £41 cheaper each time.

The bigger saving is in frequency, not the invoice. That EV service is quoted on a two-year or 20,000-mile interval, where a petrol full service is an annual or 12,000-mile job with an interim service (£183.95) or an oil-and-filter change (£129.95) in between. Across a typical year of driving, the electric car simply visits the workshop less. Manufacturer schedules say the same thing: the RAC records the Renault Zoe on 18,000-mile intervals against 9,000 miles for its petrol siblings, Volkswagen’s ID.3 and ID.4 at first inspection after two years then annually or 18,000 miles, and Tesla has no scheduled annual service at all — only a brake-fluid health check every four years and a cabin filter every two.

One warning before you bank the saving. Which?’s owner survey of 63,334 UK motorists (April–June 2025, covering 72,470 cars) found EV owners aged 0–4 years actually reported £351 average annual servicing spend against £335 for petrol — because EV owners skew towards franchised dealers and premium models, not because the work costs more. Where you take the car matters more than what it runs on: the same survey put franchised dealers at £361 and independents at £260.

What an EV service includes — and everything it skips

An electric car service is a chassis, safety and software job rather than an engine job. The published EV service at a national chain covers a comprehensive vehicle inspection, a pollen or cabin filter replacement, a brake fluid change and all four wheels balanced. At a franchised dealer you would add a high-voltage system diagnostic, a battery state-of-health readout, coolant-loop and charge-port checks, software updates, and inspection of the reduction gearbox oil, suspension, steering, wipers and 12-volt battery. The RAC notes that manufacturer schedules routinely include motor and battery checks plus fluid top-ups, while brake components, tyres and wiper blades stay outside the service as wear items you pay for separately.

What disappears is the expensive half of a combustion service. There is no engine oil and no oil filter, no fuel filter or air filter, no spark plugs or glow plugs, no exhaust, catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter, no clutch in a single-speed transmission, and above all no cambelt — a job the RAC prices at around £430 including parts and labour, due somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 miles or every five to ten years. Skip that once and you have paid for roughly two EV services. Parkers’ three-year cost modelling puts routine servicing at £311 for an electric car against £598 for petrol, which is close to a £96-a-year difference on the servicing line alone.

The MOT shrinks too, though not in price. Electric cars need the same annual test from three years old and the fee is capped identically at £54.85, but there is no emissions test and no exhaust or fuel-system inspection — the tester still checks brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights and body condition. Newer EVs with regenerative braking do get closer scrutiny of brake performance on the rollers, because lightly used discs corrode.

Brakes, tyres and what the annual saving actually comes to

Regenerative braking is the quiet star of EV maintenance economics. Because the motor does most of the slowing and the friction brakes only step in for hard stops, pads and discs last far longer — UK independents and EV specialists commonly report 60,000 to 100,000 miles between pad changes on an electric car against 30,000 to 50,000 miles on a comparable petrol car. Parkers’ three-year modelling makes the point brutally: £9 spent on brake components on the EV versus £135 on the petrol car. The corollary is that EV discs are more likely to fail an MOT on corrosion than on wear, which is why an annual brake clean-and-inspect is worth having even on a car with no scheduled service due.

Tyres move in the opposite direction, and they move hard. An electric family car typically carries 400–600kg more kerb weight than the petrol equivalent and delivers full torque from a standstill; Emissions Analytics’ measurements suggest roughly 20% more tyre wear for every extra 450kg. Real-world EV tyre life lands around 15,000–25,000 miles against 20,000–40,000 miles on petrol, and EV-specific tyres from Michelin or Continental carry a 15–30% premium over their standard equivalents. Parkers has EV owners spending £915 on tyres over three years against £614 — a £301 penalty that swallows most of the £287 servicing saving.

Net it out and the honest answer is a modest win, not a transformation. On Parkers’ three-year totals, an EV costs £1,486 in service, maintenance and repairs against £1,610 for petrol and £1,604 for diesel — about £41 a year once tyres are included, or roughly £96 a year if you look only at the servicing line. Cap HPI’s longer-standing analysis, cited by the RAC, is more generous at up to 23% lower over three years and 60,000 miles, largely because higher-mileage use amortises the fixed EV service across more miles. Both are true; the gap between them is mostly annual mileage.

Two practical levers decide which end of that range you land on. The first is where you take the car: main-dealer labour runs roughly £90–£180 an hour in 2026 against £35–£100 at independents, and the Which? survey’s £361-versus-£260 split is the direct consequence. Not every independent can take EV work — the training, insulated tooling and dedicated high-voltage bay are a real barrier — but chains such as Halfords now run IMI-qualified EV technicians across roughly 600 UK garages, and Kwik Fit prices EV work from the same national menu. The second is the manufacturer service plan: the RAC records a Renault Zoe plan at £299 for three years and 30,000 miles against £499 for the petrol or diesel equivalent, Audi e-tron cover from £299.25, and Vauxhall EV servicing from £90 in year one rising to £239. These are prepayment plans, not insurance, and they lock in labour rates rather than covering failures; whether they beat pay-as-you-go depends entirely on your mileage and how long you keep the car.

One line item that does not fall with the servicing bill is cover. Electric cars still price above their petrol equivalents on most books — Parkers puts the gap at around £117 a year — because specialist repair networks and battery-related total losses feed into claims costs.
