But the number that matters more is how rarely anyone pays it: every mainstream EV sold in the UK carries at least an 8-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty guaranteeing 70% capacity, measured degradation now averages 2.3% a year, and independent tracking puts out-of-warranty pack replacement at well under 3% of cars — and near 0.3% for 2022-onward models. How much does it cost to replace an EV battery in the UK?

A full traction-battery replacement on a UK electric car costs about £4,000 at the very cheapest and up to £18,000 on a large premium SUV, with most mainstream cars landing between £5,500 and £11,500 fitted. Pack size is the dominant variable: a 42 kWh Fiat 500e pack is a fraction of a 105 kWh BMW iX pack, because you are essentially buying kilowatt-hours. Labour is not trivial either — UK specialists quote £1,000 to £2,000 on top of the part for a Nissan Leaf, and Tesla packs commonly take two to five days of workshop time because the battery is a structural member of the car.

Those are list prices for a scenario most owners never reach. Manufacturer cover is the first line of defence: UK-market EVs are warranted for a minimum of eight years or 100,000 miles, and the warranty pays if capacity falls below the stated threshold — usually 70%. Independent fleet data shows real packs degrading at roughly 2.3% a year, which projects to about 82% capacity after eight years, comfortably clear of that threshold. The realistic 2026 question for most drivers is not "what does a new pack cost" but "what happens if a collision damages my pack" — and that is an insurance question, not a wear-and-tear one.

Why a pack costs what it costs — and why the price keeps falling

Strip out labour and you are buying energy storage by the kilowatt-hour. BloombergNEF's December 2025 price survey put the global average lithium-ion pack price at $108/kWh, down 8% in a year, and forecast a further 3% fall to $105/kWh in 2026. That is the manufacturing cost, not the retail counter price — European pack prices ran about 56% above China's $84/kWh average — but the direction of travel explains why replacement quotes today are a fraction of what they were a decade ago.

Three things sit between that wholesale number and the invoice. First, the pack sold to you as a spare part carries dealer margin, VAT and freight. Second, high-voltage work needs specifically trained technicians and quarantined workspace, which is why labour runs to four figures. Third, on many 2020-onward EVs the pack is a structural element bonded into the floor, so removing it is body-shop work rather than a component swap. Older designs such as the Nissan Leaf, where the pack unbolts, are meaningfully cheaper to service — which is exactly the design principle Thatcham Research is now pushing the industry back towards.

What the 8-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty actually covers

Every EV sold in the UK carries a separate battery warranty on top of the vehicle warranty, and it is longer than most people assume. Which? summarises the market floor plainly: manufacturers must provide a main-battery warranty of at least eight years or 100,000 miles. RAC Drive's published comparison shows the current UK terms:

  • Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, Renault — 8 years / 100,000 miles
  • Tesla Model 3 and Model Y (RWD) — 8 years / 100,000 miles; Long Range and Performance — 8 years / 120,000 miles
  • Tesla Model S and Model X — 8 years / 150,000 miles
  • MG — 7 years / 93,000 miles

The critical detail is the trigger. These are not "the battery must still work" warranties — they are state-of-health warranties. Cover pays out if usable capacity drops below a stated percentage of the original, and across almost the whole UK market that percentage is 70%. Some newer Tesla models guarantee 80%. Below the threshold, the manufacturer repairs or replaces at no cost; at 71% you have no claim, however disappointing the range feels.

Two practical caveats. Warranties transfer with the car in the UK, which materially protects second and third owners — a used 2020 EV bought in 2026 typically still has around two years of battery cover left. And they are voided by the usual things: non-franchise high-voltage repairs, flood or impact damage, and in some cases sustained daily rapid-charging to 100%. Damage from a collision is never a warranty matter; that is what your motor policy is for.

How fast batteries actually degrade — and how often packs really fail

The gap between the fear and the measurements is the single most useful thing on this page. Three independent 2025–26 datasets point the same way.

Geotab's 2026 EV Battery Health Study analysed more than 22,700 electric vehicles across 21 makes and models and found average degradation of 2.3% a year — up from 1.8% in its 2024 study, which Geotab attributes to heavier DC rapid-charging use rather than to worse batteries. Split by charging habit, cars leaning on 100 kW-plus rapid charging degraded at up to 3.0% a year, while cars mostly charged on AC managed about 1.5%. At the 2.3% average, a pack still holds roughly 82% of original capacity at eight years — well above the 70% warranty floor.

The Which? Car Survey 2025, published 29 April 2026, asked 4,444 UK EV owners about real-world range. Cars first registered in 2018–19 retained 94% of their original range; 2020–21 and 2022–23 cars retained 95%; 2024–25 cars 97%. Among owners of cars under two years old, 66% reported no measurable drop at all.

Thatcham Research's generational testing of more than 8,000 electric cars and vans found a median state of health of 93.53% at four to five years and 85% at eight to nine years — again, clear of the threshold at the point the warranty expires.

Outright failure is rarer still. Recurrent, which tracks a large EV owner community, reports an overall battery-replacement rate of about 2.5% — and that figure is dominated by first-generation cars now 14 years old. For 2022-onward EVs the replacement rate falls to around 0.3% outside recall campaigns. With more than 2.1 million battery-electric cars on UK roads by the end of June 2026 (about 6.1% of the roughly 34 million car parc), out-of-warranty pack purchases remain a small minority event.

Module-level repair vs full-pack replacement

A traction battery is not one thing. It is dozens of modules, each holding many cells, wired in series under a single case. When a pack "fails", it is usually one or two weak modules dragging the whole string down — which is why the full-pack price is often the wrong number to quote.

A growing UK independent sector does module-level work. Published pricing puts a refurbished or module-repaired pack at £2,500–£4,500 fitted, roughly half the OEM price for the same car. Cheltenham-based Cleevely EV goes further and publishes capacity upgrades for older Leafs at £5,995 for 40 kWh and £7,995 for 62 kWh including VAT — more range than the car left the factory with, for less than a dealer pack. Other named UK specialists include Kinghorn Electric Vehicles, EV Wales and Electron Garage.

The constraint is authorisation and capacity. Several manufacturers do not sanction cell- or module-level repair and insist on whole-pack replacement for safety and warranty reasons, and the number of UK facilities equipped to open a live pack safely is still small. That shortage is precisely what Thatcham Research's EV Blueprint, published 3 March 2026, targets: its eight recommendations include modular pack construction, simplified battery removal and reinstatement, resettable safety loops and accessible diagnostics, so that repair becomes the default rather than the exception.

What a damaged pack means for a write-off

For most UK drivers the battery risk that actually bites is a collision, not old age. Thatcham Research puts the battery at up to 40% of an EV's total value, and a UK insurer typically declares a total loss when repair costs reach roughly 50–70% of market value. Do the arithmetic and the problem is obvious: on a five-year-old EV worth £14,000, a £9,000 pack plus bodywork clears the write-off line on its own. That is why relatively low-speed impacts that compromise the battery casing can total an otherwise repairable car.

Insurers feel it too. In Thatcham's survey work, 44.6% of insurers and 41.7% of repairers named battery-related issues as their primary EV concern. Three things follow for owners. Check that your policy covers the battery as part of the vehicle rather than excluding it — standard comprehensive cover normally does, but older lease-battery arrangements on some Renault and Nissan models need reading carefully. Understand that a total loss pays market value, not replacement cost, and that EVs depreciated hard in 2023–24, so the gap between settlement and outstanding finance can be wide. Products exist to bridge that gap — GAP insurance and insurance-backed warranties are sold precisely for it — but they are regulated products with real cost and real exclusions, they suit some owners and not others, and this page makes no recommendation either way. It measurably accelerates degradation, though not catastrophically. Geotab's 2026 analysis found vehicles relying heavily on DC rapid charging above 100 kW degraded at up to 3.0 percent a year, against about 1.5 percent for vehicles charged mainly on AC or lower-power DC. That is the difference between roughly 78 and 89 percent capacity after eight years. Geotab attributes the rise in its fleet-wide average from 1.8 to 2.3 percent a year mainly to increased rapid-charging use. Using AC charging as the default and reserving rapid charging for longer journeys is the practical takeaway.
The underlying cell and pack costs are. BloombergNEF's December 2025 survey put the global average lithium-ion pack price at 108 US dollars per kilowatt-hour, an 8 percent fall in a year, and forecast a further 3 percent drop to 105 dollars in 2026, driven by manufacturing overcapacity and the shift to lower-cost lithium iron phosphate chemistry. Retail replacement prices lag that curve because they carry margin, VAT, freight and specialist labour, and European pack prices run well above the global average. The direction of travel is still firmly downward.
