What does it cost to insure a Dacia Duster Journey?

Expect around £750 a year for comprehensive cover on a current (2024-on) Dacia Duster Journey if you are a typical experienced driver. That estimate is anchored to Finder’s all-Duster average of £708 and adjusted for the Journey’s position at the very top of the Duster’s insurance-group ladder: Parkers lists the Journey in groups 24–26 out of 50 depending on engine, against groups as low as 17 for the entry Essential and 5–25 across the wider Duster family. It is above the UK-wide comprehensive average of around £600, but comfortably below the ~£850 typical of UK SUVs.

The Journey is Dacia’s comfort-focused flagship trim, and three things push its groups — and premiums — above its siblings:

Within the Journey itself, the automatic Hybrid 140 and the TCe 130 4x4 are the cheapest to insure at group 24; the Hybrid 155 automatic is the priciest at group 26 — the highest group of any current Duster.

Why the Journey sits where it does in the range

Dacia positions the Journey as the “comfort” flagship of the Duster range — above Essential and Expression, alongside the more rugged, off-road-flavoured Extreme. For insurers, trim matters mainly through engines and equipment, and the Journey’s spec sheet reads richer than its price suggests: 18-inch alloys, a 10.1-inch central touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring, sat-nav, keyless entry, a reversing camera and blind-spot monitoring are all standard.

Interestingly, more technology does not always mean a higher group. The Journey Hybrid 140 automatic sits in group 24, one below the mechanically simpler TCe 130 front-wheel-drive at 25 — hybrids can earn slightly friendlier ratings thanks to gentler automatic power delivery and strong standard safety kit, and the 4x4 version of the TCe 130 also rates at 24. At the other end, the 155hp range-topping hybrid is group 26, the highest of any current Duster. The gap to an Extreme is negligible: like-for-like engines carry near-identical groups, so choosing between the two top trims makes almost no difference to your premium.

Put simply: if you want the Journey’s kit, the insurance penalty over a mid-range Expression is only around £20–£40 a year on a like-for-like engine. The bigger step is engine choice within the trim itself.

Cheaper alternatives — and how to cut the Journey’s premium

If the quote on a Journey stings, there are two routes: pick a cheaper-to-insure Duster, or keep the Journey and work the premium down.

Dacia Duster Journey insurance: your questions answered

The current (2024-on) Dacia Duster Journey sits in insurance groups 24 to 26 out of 50, according to Parkers and Thatcham Research data. The Hybrid 140 automatic and the TCe 130 4x4 are group 24, the front-wheel-drive TCe 130 and TCe mild hybrid 140 are group 25, and the Hybrid 155 automatic is group 26.
Around £750 a year for comprehensive cover for a typical experienced driver. That is a little above Finder’s £708 all-Duster average because the Journey sits at the top of the range’s insurance groups, and about 25% above the UK-wide average of roughly £600. Over-50s with a full no-claims discount can pay under £600.
Three reasons: the Journey is only sold with the more powerful 130–155hp engines, so it misses the low-group TCe 100 Bi-Fuel; its extra standard equipment — 18-inch alloys, the 10.1-inch touchscreen, keyless entry, cameras and sensors — makes claims costlier; and its higher list price raises the insurer’s maximum payout.
The Hybrid 140 automatic and the TCe 130 4x4, both in group 24 — one group below the front-wheel-drive TCe 130 and two below the Hybrid 155. On a typical experienced-driver policy the group-24 variants run around £700–£750 a year.
Yes — at group 26 the Journey Hybrid 155 automatic carries the highest insurance group of any current Duster, typically adding £40–£60 a year over the group-24 Hybrid 140 it replaced at the top of the range. It is still modest by SUV standards.
A 17–24-year-old should budget roughly £1,400–£1,800 a year comprehensive. Groups 24–26 work against young drivers, so consider a black-box (telematics) policy, adding an experienced named driver, or starting on a lower-group Duster such as the Essential Bi-Fuel.
Pick a group-24 engine (Hybrid 140 auto or TCe 130 4x4), run a comparison site and then quote Direct Line and Aviva separately, pay annually rather than monthly, build and protect your no-claims discount, set a voluntary excess you can genuinely afford, and declare accurate mileage. Together these commonly save £100–£250 a year.
Yes. At around £750 a year it undercuts the ~£850 typical of UK SUVs and 4x4s, despite being the Duster’s flagship trim. Cheap parts, simple Renault-Nissan Alliance mechanicals and a modest list price keep even the highest-spec Duster affordable to cover.
