Audi A4 insurance cost UK 2026

The average Audi A4 costs about £1,278 a year to insure comprehensively in 2026, sitting in insurance groups 19 to 46 depending on engine and trim — well above the £719 average comprehensive quote recorded by the Confused.com Price Index, because the A4 is a premium German saloon with premium parts and repair bills.

Direct answer: what does it cost to insure an Audi A4?

A typical UK driver insuring an Audi A4 pays in the region of £1,100 to £1,300 a year for fully comprehensive cover, with model-level market data from Finder UK putting the average at £1,278.44 a year (about £111.50 a month if paid by instalments). For context, the Confused.com Price Index put the average comprehensive quote across all cars at £719 in its Q2 2026 reading, while the ABI’s Motor Insurance Premium Tracker put the average price actually paid at around £560 in Q1 2026. Those two figures are measured on different bases — quoted versus paid — so they should never be blended, but on either measure the A4 sits comfortably above the market.

Four structural factors explain the gap:

The important nuance is that “the A4” is not one price. The spread between the cheapest and dearest A4 is enormous, and a settled driver in a low-group A4 can get close to the national average — while the same car in the wrong trim, postcode or age band costs several times that.

Driver age is the single biggest lever on the price of an A4 policy — bigger than trim, and usually bigger than postcode. The figures below are indicative annual comprehensive premiums for a mid-specification Audi A4 saloon (roughly group 23–26) with a clean licence, average annual mileage and off-street parking. Your own quote will move with no-claims bonus, occupation, claims history and postcode.

Postcode moves the number almost as much as trim does. On the same base A4, Finder records roughly £869 in east London (E10) against £594 in Chester (CH1) and £472 in Newquay (TR8) — an 84% spread on an identical car and driver, driven entirely by local theft and claims frequency.

Audi A4 insurance group by trim and engine

Insurance groups are set by Thatcham Research on a 1–50 scale using repair cost, parts prices, performance and security. Within the A4 range the spread is unusually wide, so the version you choose is worth real money every year.

The cheapest way to insure an Audi A4 — and the alternatives

If you already own an A4, most of your saving comes from how you buy the policy. If you are still choosing, the trim decision is worth more than everything else combined.

Cheaper alternatives to consider. If the A4’s premium is the sticking point, the Audi A3 delivers much of the same cabin and badge from lower groups and averages nearer £1,196 a year. A Volkswagen Passat or Skoda Superb shares much of the A4’s platform engineering at noticeably lower group ratings, and a Ford Mondeo or Mazda6 in a comparable spec will usually undercut all of them. Within the Audi range, a lower-group A4 will almost always beat a higher-group Audi Q3 on price. Browse the full by-vehicle index to compare.

Audi A4 insurance: your questions answered

The Audi A4 range spans insurance groups 19 to 46 out of 50. The 1.4 TFSI SE saloon sits at the bottom on group 19, mid-range 30 TDI and 35 TFSI trims land around groups 22 to 26, the 40 TDI quattro Sport reaches 31, and performance S4 and RS4 derivatives run from 36 up to 46. Most ordinary A4s on UK roads sit in the low-to-mid 20s. Check the group for your exact trim, engine and transmission before you buy.
Around 1,278 pounds a year on average for fully comprehensive cover, based on Finder UK model-level quote data. A driver aged 35 to 64 with a clean licence and full no-claims will often pay 550 to 800 pounds, while a 17 to 24 year old typically faces 2,100 to 3,400 pounds. For comparison, the Confused.com Price Index put the average comprehensive quote across all cars at 719 pounds in Q2 2026 and the ABI put the average premium actually paid at about 560 pounds in Q1 2026.
Four reasons: it starts at group 19 and climbs to 46, so it is grouped well above a mainstream hatchback; its value means a larger total-loss payout; genuine Audi parts, aluminium panels, Matrix LED headlights and driver-assistance sensors make repairs expensive, with ADAS recalibration adding hundreds of pounds to routine claims; and premium German saloons are a known relay-theft target. The ABI has repeatedly identified repair cost as the main upward pressure on motor premiums in 2026.
The 1.4 TFSI SE 150PS saloon at insurance group 19 is the cheapest A4 in the range. The 30 TDI Technik 136PS at group 22 and the 35 TFSI Sport Edition at group 23 are the next cheapest and are far more common on the used market. Avoid quattro versions, the 45 TFSI Vorsprung at group 39 and any S4 or RS4 if premium is your priority.
Sometimes, but it depends on output rather than fuel. The 30 TDI Technik sits at group 22, below the 2.0 TFSI SE at group 26, so the small diesel is cheaper than the bigger petrol. But the 40 TDI quattro Sport at group 31 is far dearer than the 1.4 TFSI SE at group 19. Compare the specific engine and trim, not petrol versus diesel in general.
Yes. Keyless Audis, including the A3 and A4, are targeted by relay and key-cloning attacks alongside BMW and Mercedes equivalents, and theft risk is priced into the premium, especially in urban postcodes. Finder data on an identical base A4 shows roughly 869 pounds in east London against 472 pounds in Newquay. A Faraday pouch, a steering lock, an OBD port guard, a Thatcham-approved tracker and off-street or garaged parking all help.
No. Even the lowest-group A4 is a poor first car on price: a 17 to 24 year old should budget 2,100 to 3,400 pounds a year, and considerably more in a high-risk postcode or on a quattro trim. A telematics or black box policy is usually the most effective way to bring the number down, followed by adding an older experienced named driver, though the main policyholder must be the main user or it is fronting, which is fraud.
Not for existing owners. Audi briefly moved to odd numbers for combustion cars, so the direct A4 replacement launched as the A5 for the 2025 model year, and Audi has since said publicly that the change was a mistake and it will return to its earlier naming. Practically, insurers price the car in front of them by registration, VIN and Thatcham group, not by badge, so the figures on this page apply to the A4 saloon and Avant as sold up to 2024. If you are quoting a newer car, search the A5 name instead.
