Citroen Berlingo insurance cost UK 2026
Citroen Berlingo insurance averages about £695 a year for comprehensive cover in 2026 — roughly 3% below the ~£719 UK average quoted premium — thanks to a van-derived design that keeps repair bills low. Groups span 4 on an older 1.6 HDi Multispace to 23 at the top, with the current diesel and petrol MPV mostly sitting in the 8–16 band and the electric e-Berlingo higher at group 18–21. Groups by version, premiums by driver age and the cheapest ways to insure one are below.
Why Citroen Berlingo insurance costs what it does
For a typical experienced driver, comprehensive cover on a Citroen Berlingo passenger MPV averages around £695 a year in 2026 (Finder UK quote sampling) — about 3% below the ~£719 average quoted premium in the Confused.com Price Index, and above the ~£566 the ABI says motorists actually paid on average (quoted and paid figures use different bases, so never compare one directly with the other). The Berlingo lands below the market average for a simple reason: it is a van underneath a family body, so its parts are cheap and plentiful, its performance is modest, and its claims profile is dominated by low-speed knocks rather than expensive high-speed damage or theft. Which side of that average you land on depends mainly on which Berlingo you pick:
- Older Multispace models are the cheap end (groups 4–8) — the 2008–2018 Berlingo Multispace with the 1.6 HDi diesel in VT trim rates as low as group 4, and the 2018-on Feel M BlueHDi 75 rates group 8. Low power, a low list price and cheap repairs keep both claims costs and premiums small — this is where the sub-£500 experienced-driver quotes come from.
- The mainstream 2018-on MPV sits mid-table (groups 10–16) — most current diesel and petrol Berlingos — Feel, Flair, Flair XTR, Plus, Rip Curl, Max and Collection — rate between groups 10 and 16 depending on engine (1.5 BlueHDi 100/130 or 1.2 PureTech 130) and body length (M or the longer XL). The 1.5 D 130 Collection M Auto is the dearest combustion version at group 16.
- The electric e-Berlingo is the top end (groups 18–21) — the battery-electric e-Berlingo rates groups 18–21. Its drive battery is the single most expensive component on the car, and post-accident battery inspection or replacement pushes EV claims costs — and therefore the Thatcham group — well above the diesel equivalent.
One important caveat: this page is about the passenger Berlingo (the five-seat or seven-seat MPV, sometimes badged Berlingo XL or, historically, Multispace), which takes ordinary private car insurance. The panel-van Berlingo used for work needs commercial van insurance, not a car policy. Note too that facelifted Berlingos built after mid-2023 are legally classed as a five-seat "window van" rather than a conventional car — it still insures as a private vehicle when used privately, but always quote it under its exact registration so the insurer prices the correct body type.

The cheapest way to insure a Citroen Berlingo
Pick the version before you pick the insurer. The Berlingo's own group spread is your biggest lever: an older 1.6 HDi Multispace in group 4, or a 2018-on Feel BlueHDi 75 in group 8, will always undercut a group 16 Collection auto or a group 18–21 e-Berlingo for the same driver. Finder's sampling shows a group 4 car costing an over-50 as little as about £411 a year, and even a 20-year-old only £784 — low for a young driver — because the Berlingo's van underpinnings keep repair costs down and it is not a theft target.
Then work the policy itself. Pay annually if you can — Finder's Berlingo monthly figure of £62.90 works out around £755 a year, roughly 9% more than the £695 annual average, because instalments carry interest. A realistic annual mileage, a driveway or off-road parking spot, a sensible voluntary excess and an experienced named driver all trim the price further. For a young or new driver a black box (telematics) policy usually takes hundreds off — worth comparing against the standard quote every time.
Considering alternatives? If you want the space without the electric car's group 18–21 rating, a diesel Berlingo MPV in groups 8–15 is the obvious pick over the e-Berlingo. Cross-shopping the class, the closely related Peugeot Rifter and Vauxhall Combo Life share the same platform and rate similarly, while a conventional estate can undercut all of them on group. Make sure you are quoting the passenger MPV, not the panel van — the van needs commercial cover. You can compare more models in our insurance costs by vehicle hub.
