Renault Captur insurance cost UK 2026
A Renault Captur costs around £715 a year to insure comprehensively in 2026 and sits in insurance groups 7–22 – with the current TCe 115 and E-Tech 160 line-up occupying a tight groups 14–17 band. That puts one of the UK’s best-selling small SUVs about 1.2x the ~£600 UK comprehensive average: dearer than its Clio sibling, but comfortably cheaper than most mid-size SUVs. Below: premiums by driver age, group ratings for every 2026 trim, and the levers that actually cut the price.
How much does Renault Captur insurance cost – and why?
For a typical experienced driver, comprehensive Renault Captur cover averages around £715 a year in 2026 (Finder’s April 2026 model average was £714.55). VehicleScore’s modelled quotes put an entry-level car at roughly £700 for a 30-year-old and £495 for a 50-year-old in an average postcode. That is a little above the UK’s ~£600 comprehensive benchmark – the ABI’s tracker shows £560 actually paid (Q1 2026) while the Confused.com Price Index shows £719 quoted (Q2 2026).
Three structural factors set the Captur’s price:
- Low-to-mid insurance groups (7–22). Earlier TCe 90 petrol cars sit as low as groups 7–12; the current TCe 115 rates group 14 in every trim, and the E-Tech full-hybrid 160 tops out at group 17 in Esprit Alpine spec. Nothing in the range gets near the expensive half of the 1–50 scale.
- Modest values and cheap parts. The 2026 range spans £22,495–£28,795 on the road, shares its platform and parts with the Clio, and repairs use widely available components – so expected claim costs stay low.
- A small-SUV premium over the equivalent supermini. The Captur’s higher body, bigger panels and extra kit put it a few groups above a like-for-like Clio, which is why it averages ~£715 against the Clio’s lower typical premium.

Renault Captur insurance groups by trim and engine (2026)
The 2026 Captur range is three trims – Evolution, Techno and Esprit Alpine – and two powertrains: the new TCe 115 petrol (which replaced the old TCe 90 as the entry engine) and the E-Tech full-hybrid 160 (which replaced the E-Tech 145). Parkers lists the TCe 115 in group 14 in every trim, so on the petrol car you can pick spec on equipment alone without moving the premium. The hybrid carries a two-to-three-group surcharge for its extra power and battery hardware, peaking at group 17 in Esprit Alpine spec. Used 2020–2024 TCe 90 cars sit lowest of all, in groups 7–12 depending on trim.
| Trim / engine | Insurance group (1–50) | 2026 OTR price |
|---|---|---|
| Evolution TCe 115 | 14 | £22,495 |
| Evolution E-Tech 160 hybrid | 16 | £25,195 |
| Techno TCe 115 | 14 | £24,295 |
| Techno E-Tech 160 hybrid | 16 | £26,995 |
| Esprit Alpine TCe 115 | 14 | £26,095 |
| Esprit Alpine E-Tech 160 hybrid | 17 | £28,795 |
| Used TCe 90 (2020–2024, all trims) | 7–12 | Used market |

Cheaper alternatives – and how to cut Captur insurance
If the quote still stings, the cheapest route into a Captur is a used 2020–2024 TCe 90: at groups 7–12 it can undercut a new hybrid’s premium by a meaningful margin, especially for younger drivers where every group counts. Cheaper-to-insure alternatives include the Renault Clio (from group 3 as a TCe 90 – the same mechanicals in a lower, lighter body) and other low-group superminis, while rival small SUVs such as the entry Skoda Kamiq and Toyota Yaris Cross hybrids tend to sit in a similar low-to-mid teens band to the Captur itself.
- Pick the petrol if price rules. The TCe 115 is group 14 in every trim – taking Esprit Alpine spec over Evolution costs nothing extra in group terms on the petrol car.
- Buy the trim, not the hybrid, for a young driver. The E-Tech 160’s groups 16–17 add a premium exactly where young-driver pricing is most sensitive.
- Use a black box (telematics) under 25 – the single biggest lever, routinely cutting hundreds off the 17–24 band figure above.
- Pay annually, not monthly. Instalment APR typically adds 10–15% over the year.
- Build and protect no-claims discount – the reason the 50–64 band pays £530 against £1,310 at 17–24.
- Add an experienced named driver honestly (never “fronting”, which is fraud).
- Quote about three weeks before renewal and compare several sites plus direct-only insurers – auto-renewal is rarely the best price.
