Toyota Yaris Icon insurance cost UK 2026
A Toyota Yaris Icon costs about £690 a year to insure comprehensively in 2026 and sits in insurance group 13 of 50 — the lowest group of any current Yaris, and around £105 below the blended £795 average for the range as a whole. Direct answer
How much does it cost to insure a Toyota Yaris Icon?
A typical 35-year-old with a few years of no-claims pays around £690 a year for comprehensive cover on a Toyota Yaris Icon 1.5 Hybrid — about £90 above the ~£600 UK comprehensive average tracked by the ABI and the Confused.com Price Index, but roughly £105 below the £795 blended figure Finder reports across all Toyota Yaris models. That blended number is dragged upward by the group 35–44 GR Yaris and by the disproportionate number of young drivers in Yaris policies; the Icon is the cheapest slice of the range.
The Icon sits at the bottom of the current Yaris ladder, in group 13 of 50, for three structural reasons:
- It is the entry grade. Parkers rates the 1.5 Hybrid Icon at group 13, while Design, Dynamic, GR Sport and Excel are group 14, the Hybrid 130 GR Sport and Premiere Edition are group 15, and the Hybrid 130 Excel reaches group 16. A lower list price means a lower maximum payout for the insurer.
- It uses the standard 116PS hybrid, not the 130. The Icon pairs the 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with the smaller of the two electric motor outputs, giving modest performance that Thatcham Research barely has to price for. Opting for the more powerful Hybrid 130 drivetrain moves other grades up two to three groups.
- Damage limitation is standard. Icon spec includes the full Toyota Safety Sense package — autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise — plus a reversing camera. That cuts claim frequency, which is one of the two levers Thatcham weighs when it sets a group.
What pulls the Icon above a plain petrol supermini is the hybrid hardware itself. An inverter, traction battery and high-voltage wiring make a moderate front-end shunt more expensive to repair than the same damage on a 1.0-litre rival, which is why hybrids average nearer £780 a year across the UK market. Group 13 is the compromise between very low claim frequency and moderately high claim cost.
Cost by driver age
Yaris Icon premiums by driver age band
Age moves the price of a group 13 car more than any other single rating factor. The figures below layer typical UK age-band pricing onto the Icon’s group 13 profile — indicative estimates for comprehensive cover on a 1.5 Hybrid Icon, not live quotes.

| Driver age band | Indicative annual premium | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 17 (new driver) | £1,900–£2,600 | Typical ~£2,250; group 13 is punchy for a first car — telematics usually essential |
| 18–20 | £1,400–£2,000 | Typical ~£1,700; falls sharply with each claim-free year |
| 21–24 | £980–£1,400 | Typical ~£1,180; black-box policies still worth quoting |
| 25–34 | £740–£1,000 | Typical ~£860; the steepest part of the age curve flattens here |
| 35–44 | £620–£780 | Typical ~£690; about 15% above the UK average, 13% below the Yaris blended figure |
| 45–64 | £570–£700 | Typical ~£630; the cheapest years to run an Icon |
| 65+ | £600–£740 | Typical ~£665; edges up again as risk rises with age |

Icon vs other trims
Yaris insurance group by trim — where the Icon sits
Every fourth-generation Yaris shares the same 1.5-litre hybrid architecture, so grade, equipment level and the choice between the 116PS and 130PS outputs decide the group. The whole hatchback range spans just four groups — 13 to 16 — with the Icon alone at the bottom.
| Version | Insurance group | Indicative premium (age 35) |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 Hybrid Icon | 13 | ~£690 |
| 1.5 Hybrid Design CVT | 14 | ~£715 |
| 1.5 Hybrid Dynamic CVT | 14 | ~£715 |
| 1.5 Hybrid GR Sport CVT | 14 | ~£715 |
| 1.5 Hybrid Excel CVT | 14 | ~£715 |
| 1.5 Hybrid 130 GR Sport CVT | 15 | ~£740 |
| 1.5 Hybrid 130 Premiere Edition CVT | 15 | ~£740 |
| 1.5 Hybrid 130 Excel CVT | 16 | ~£765 |
Groups from Parkers / Thatcham Research for the Toyota Yaris hatchback (2020 onwards). Premiums are indicative for a 35-year-old with five years’ no-claims, benchmarked to our £690 Icon figure. The GR Yaris is a separate model in groups 35–44.
The practical takeaway: choosing the Icon over an Excel saves an experienced driver only around £25 a year, and over a Hybrid 130 Excel about £75 — the range is tightly bunched because insurers are pricing the same hybrid hardware in every car. The spread widens considerably for younger drivers, where a three-group gap can be worth £150–£250 a year at 21. What you should not do is assume a Yaris quote is a Yaris quote: the group 13 Icon and the group 44 GR Yaris are separated by well over £1,000 a year.

Cheaper alternatives — and how to cut Icon cover further
If group 13 is more than your budget stretches to, these tracked models sit meaningfully lower:
- Toyota Aygo X Pure — group 5, roughly £565 a year; the same dealer network and warranty for around £125 less.
- Kia Picanto — entry trims in the very lowest groups, with a seven-year warranty.
- Hyundai i10 — a low-group city car with more cabin space than the numbers suggest.
- Volkswagen Polo — entry trims start from group 1 if you want supermini size at city-car premiums.
- Older third-generation Yaris models (2011–2020) sit in groups 2–12, so a used non-hybrid Yaris undercuts a new Icon on premium as well as on price.
Sticking with the Icon? These levers move the number most:
- Quote the exact grade. Enter “1.5 Hybrid Icon”, not just “Yaris”. The range spans groups 2–44, and a vague entry can land you priced against a higher grade.
- Skip the Hybrid 130. If you are still choosing a car, the 116PS Icon is two to three groups below the 130 versions — worth £50–£75 a year to an experienced driver and far more to a young one.
- Take telematics if you are under 25. On a group 13 hybrid a black box is usually the single biggest saving available to a new driver, often several hundred pounds.
- Pay annually and protect no-claims. Monthly instalments add 10–15% in interest; five claim-free years typically halves the base premium.
- Keep modifications off it. Alloys, tints and remaps all have to be declared and will push a group 13 car up the scale or out of the mainstream market entirely.
- Set a realistic mileage. The Icon is bought as a low-mileage town car; declaring 6,000 miles rather than a default 10,000 usually shaves a few per cent off.
