Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line insurance cost UK 2026
The Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line costs about £690 a year to insure comprehensively for a typical mid-40s UK driver, sitting in insurance group 20 on the new 2026 car and groups 23–28 on the outgoing model — roughly 15% above the entry T-Roc Life and around £90 above the UK average of £600.
Direct answer
How much does it cost to insure a Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line?
A Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line typically costs £560–£840 a year for comprehensive cover on a clean, mid-40s driver profile, with roughly £690 as the central figure. That is around £90 more than the UK-wide average of about £600, and roughly £100 a year more than the same T-Roc in entry Life trim. Only the old 2.0 TSI 4Motion R-Line DSG pushes materially higher, at around £865 a year.
The trim rating is unusually clear-cut on this car. On the current 2026 T-Roc, Parkers lists every R-Line variant at insurance group 20, against group 14 for the cheapest 1.5 eTSI Life and group 19 for the equivalent Style. On the outgoing 2017–2025 car the R-Line spread is wider: group 23 for the 1.5 TSI EVO manual and the 2.0 TDI 150, group 24 with the DSG gearbox, group 26 for 4Motion diesel DSG versions, and group 28 for the 2.0 TSI 4Motion R-Line DSG. For the wider picture across every engine and trim, see our full Volkswagen T-Roc insurance guide.
Three structural things put the R-Line above the rest of the T-Roc range:
- List price, not speed. The 2026 R-Line opens around £38,935 against roughly £28,055 for a Life — and on a mild-hybrid 1.5 eTSI shared with the cheaper trims, that extra value is the single biggest reason the group climbs. A higher new price means a higher write-off payout.
- Cosmetic and chassis parts cost more to replace. R-Line adds bumper aero, gloss-black detailing, sports suspension, progressive steering and larger alloys (18-inch as standard, up to 20-inch optional). Thatcham rates repair cost as well as performance, and low-profile tyres and body-coloured aero panels are expensive to put right after a minor knock.
- Driver mix. Insurers price the pool, not just the car. Sporty trims attract a marginally younger, higher-mileage buyer, so the claims experience behind R-Line data is slightly worse than behind Life and Style data even where the mechanical spec is identical.
What the R-Line is not is a performance car. It is worth separating it from the discontinued T-Roc R, which used the 296bhp 2.0 TSI and sat far higher on the scale. R-Line is a styling and equipment package, and its insurance penalty over a Style is genuinely small — a single group on the 2026 car. Anyone comparing an R-Line against a mid-trim rival should be far more worried about postcode, mileage and no-claims bonus than about the badge on the wing.
The numbers
Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line insurance cost by driver age
Age moves the price far more than trim does. The figures below are indicative annual comprehensive premiums for a T-Roc R-Line specifically — a group-20 1.5 eTSI 150 R-Line DSG — anchored to the 2026 UK average and adjusted for published age-band multipliers. Your own quote will move with postcode, annual mileage, occupation, claims history and voluntary excess.

| Driver age band | Indicative annual premium (R-Line) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 17–20 | £2,400–£3,400 | Many insurers decline a group-20 SUV outright at 17; telematics is usually the only route. |
| 21–24 | £1,450–£2,200 | Two or three years of no-claims cuts the R-Line loading fastest here. |
| 25–29 | £850–£1,300 | First band where mainstream insurers price the R-Line competitively. |
| 30–39 | £640–£950 | Close to the T-Roc range average; trim penalty now under £100. |
| 40–49 | £560–£840 | The headline band — about £690 typical, £90 above the UK average. |
| 50–64 | £510–£770 | Cheapest band; a full no-claims R-Line can dip under £600. |
| 65–74 | £590–£880 | Edges up again with age loading, though low mileage offsets much of it. |

Trim comparison
R-Line vs the rest of the T-Roc range
The table below shows where R-Line sits against its sibling trims for a single reference driver (age 40–49, clean licence, 8,000 miles, suburban postcode). It is the clearest way to see what the badge actually costs you each year.
| Trim & engine | Insurance group | Indicative annual premium |
|---|---|---|
| Life 1.5 eTSI 116 (2026) | 14 | £585 |
| Life 1.5 eTSI 150 (2026) | 18 | £645 |
| Style / Match 1.5 eTSI 150 (2026) | 19 | £665 |
| R-Line 1.5 eTSI 150 (2026) | 20 | £690 |
| R-Line 1.5 TSI EVO (2017–2025) | 23 | £730 |
| R-Line 2.0 TDI 150 4Motion DSG | 26 | £800 |
| R-Line 2.0 TSI 4Motion DSG | 28 | £865 |

Two conclusions fall out of that. First, if you are buying new, the R-Line penalty over a Style is roughly £25 a year — effectively nothing, and not a reason to talk yourself out of the trim. Second, if you are buying used, the drivetrain matters far more than the trim name: an outgoing 2.0 TSI 4Motion R-Line costs around £280 a year more than a new 1.5 eTSI R-Line despite being the older, cheaper car.

Cheaper alternatives, and how to cut an R-Line premium
If you want the R-Line look without the group-28 bill, the cheapest sensible route is the current 1.5 eTSI 150 R-Line at group 20 — it is the lowest-rated R-Line VW has ever sold, because the new range drops the 2.0 TSI and 4Motion options entirely. Beyond that:
- Step down one trim to Style (group 19). You keep the 150PS engine, the digital cockpit and the LED lighting, and save roughly £25 a year plus a big chunk of list price.
- Avoid 4Motion and the 2.0-litre engines. Four-wheel drive alone adds two to three groups on the outgoing car; the 2.0 TSI 4Motion R-Line is eight groups above the current one.
- Take the standard 18-inch alloys. Optional 19- and 20-inch wheels raise tyre and kerb-damage claim costs and can nudge the quote, and they are worth declaring accurately.
- Cross-shop the group ladder. A Ford Puma ST-Line, SEAT Arona FR, Nissan Juke N-Connecta or Skoda Kamiq Monte Carlo all deliver the sporty-trim small-SUV brief from groups in the low-to-mid teens — often £80–£150 a year less.
- Compare a broker against the comparison sites. Published T-Roc market tests have run from about £581 to over £3,500 for the same car on different profiles; the cheapest name changes with your postcode.
- Protect the no-claims bonus. Five clean years typically removes 60–70% of a premium — far more than any trim decision.
- Pay annually rather than monthly and set a realistic voluntary excess; APRs on monthly instalments routinely add 20–30% to the annual cost.
- Under 25? A telematics policy is the single biggest lever on a group-20 R-Line, and often the only way to get a competitive quote at all.
FAQs
Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line insurance: your questions answered
On the 2026 T-Roc, every R-Line variant is insurance group 20 out of 50. On the outgoing 2017–2025 car the R-Line spans groups 23 to 28: group 23 for the 1.5 TSI EVO and 2.0 TDI 150, group 24 with DSG, group 26 for 4Motion diesel DSG and group 28 for the 2.0 TSI 4Motion DSG.
About £690 a year for comprehensive cover on a clean mid-40s driver, within a typical £560–£840 range. Drivers aged 50–64 average nearer £625, while a 21–24-year-old should budget £1,450–£2,200.
Yes, but less than most buyers expect. On the 2026 car the R-Line is group 20 against group 14 for the cheapest Life and group 19 for Style — roughly £105 a year more than a Life 116 and only about £25 more than a Style. See the full Volkswagen T-Roc insurance guide for the whole range.
Mostly value and repair cost rather than performance. On the 2026 car the R-Line shares its 1.5 eTSI engine with cheaper trims but costs roughly £10,000 more, and its aero bumpers, gloss-black trim, sports suspension and larger low-profile wheels are all more expensive to repair after a minor impact.
The current 1.5 eTSI 150 R-Line at group 20 is the cheapest R-Line to insure. On the used market the 1.5 TSI EVO R-Line manual (group 23) is the cheapest option; avoid the 2.0 TSI 4Motion R-Line DSG at group 28, which costs around £175 a year more.
No. A group-20 small SUV is a difficult first car: a 17–20-year-old should expect £2,400–£3,400 a year and many insurers will decline the risk outright. A telematics policy, a named experienced second driver and a genuinely low mileage declaration are the only meaningful levers.
No. R-Line styling is fitted by Volkswagen at the factory and is already priced into the group 20 rating, so you declare the car as an R-Line and nothing more. Anything added afterwards — aftermarket wheels, remaps, lowering springs, tints or exhausts — must be declared separately and will raise the premium.
For the same sporty small-SUV brief at a lower group, look at the Ford Puma ST-Line, SEAT Arona FR, Skoda Kamiq Monte Carlo or Nissan Juke N-Connecta — typically £80–£150 a year less. Staying in the VW showroom, a T-Roc Style (group 19) or a T-Cross keeps most of the look for less.
