Citroen C4 insurance cost UK 2026

Citroen C4 insurance averages about £787 a year for comprehensive cover in 2026, with the current 2021-on hatchback rating insurance groups 13 to 23 depending on trim and drivetrain. That puts the C4 a little above the ~£719 UK average quoted premium — the petrol You and Sense trims (groups 13–14) keep costs sensible, while the Hybrid and electric ë-C4 versions (groups 22–23) cost more to cover, and older C4 Cactus models drop as low as group 7. Groups by version, premiums by age and the cheapest ways to insure one are below.

Why Citroen C4 insurance costs what it does

For a typical experienced driver, comprehensive cover on a Citroen C4 averages around £787 a year in 2026 (Finder UK quote sampling) — about 9% above the ~£719 average quoted premium in the Confused.com Price Index, and well above the ~£566 the ABI says motorists actually paid on average (quoted and paid figures are different bases, so never compare one directly with the other). The C4 is a compact family hatchback rather than a supermini, and where you land on that average depends almost entirely on which C4 you pick, because the badge spans three very different rating eras:

  1. Older C4 Cactus economics (groups 7–8) — the 2014–2018 C4 Cactus with the 1.2 PureTech 82 engine rates just group 7 in Feel trim and group 8 in Flair. Modest power, a low used value and cheap, plentiful parts keep both claims costs and premiums small — Finder’s group 7 sample for a 50-year-old was about £547 a year.
  2. The current 2021-on hatchback (groups 13–23) — today’s C4 spreads across a wide band. The 1.2 PureTech petrol in You and Sense trim rates groups 13–14; the 130hp Plus, Shine and Max petrol versions rate groups 19–20; the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel sits around groups 16–21; and the Hybrid 136/145 versions climb to groups 22–23. A higher list price, the hybrid drivetrain and standard driver-assistance kit — including a windscreen camera that needs recalibrating after a glass replacement — push repair bills, and therefore the Thatcham group, upwards.
  3. EV repair economics on the ë-C4 (groups 21–23) — the electric ë-C4 and ë-C4 X rate group 22 on most trims, group 21 on entry Sense and group 23 on the top Max. The 50–54kWh battery is the single most expensive component on the car, and battery inspection or replacement after even moderate accident damage keeps EV claims costs — and groups — higher than the petrol equivalent.

The one outlier is the discontinued C4 Coupe VTS 2.0i (2004–2010), which rates group 30 — a reminder that a hot-hatch badge, not the C4 name itself, is what drives a premium sky-high. The mainstream modern C4 carries no theft premium: it is not a target for organised theft, and its claims profile is dominated by low-speed urban knocks.

Citroen C4 insurance cost by driver age

Sample comprehensive quotes from Finder’s 2026 Citroen C4 analysis. The age rows are for a group 7 C4 Cactus — the cheapest route into C4 ownership — while the final row is Finder’s average across all C4 versions and ages. A 2021-on car in groups 13–23, or an electric ë-C4 in group 22, will quote above the age-row figures shown here.

The cheapest way to insure a Citroen C4

Pick the version before you pick the insurer. The single biggest lever is the group gap between drivetrains: a 1.2 PureTech You or Sense in group 13–14 will always undercut a Hybrid or electric ë-C4 in group 22–23 for the same driver, and an older C4 Cactus in group 7 is cheaper still — Finder’s sampling shows one costing an over-50 as little as about £547 a year. For a young driver the difference is starker: the group 7 sample quote at age 20 was £1,025, and a higher-group new hybrid or EV would quote well above that.

Then work the policy itself. Pay annually if you possibly can — Finder’s C4 monthly figure of £70.51 works out around £846 a year, roughly 7% more than the £787 annual average. A black box (telematics) policy routinely takes hundreds off a young C4 driver’s quote; a realistic annual mileage, an off-road or driveway parking spot, a sensible voluntary excess and an experienced named driver all trim the price further. Because the modern C4 straddles petrol, hybrid and electric, always compare like-for-like: the three drivetrains can sit with different insurers’ sweet spots.

Considering alternatives? If the Hybrid or ë-C4’s group 22–23 rating stings, the obvious swap is a petrol 1.2 PureTech C4 in group 13–14 rather than a different badge. If you want a smaller, cheaper Citroen, the Citroen C3 averages about £673 a year — some £114 less than the C4. You can compare more models in our insurance costs by vehicle hub.

Citroen C4 insurance — your questions answered

It depends on the version. The current 2021-on hatchback spans groups 13 to 23: the 1.2 PureTech petrol in You and Sense trim rates groups 13–14, the 130hp petrol versions groups 19–20, the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel around 16–21, and the Hybrid 136/145 versions 22–23. The electric ë-C4 rates group 22 on most trims. Older 2014–2018 C4 Cactus cars drop to groups 7–8, while the discontinued C4 Coupe VTS 2.0i rates group 30.
Finder’s 2026 sampling puts the all-versions Citroen C4 average at about £787 a year for comprehensive cover — around 9% above the ~£719 UK average quoted premium in the Confused.com Price Index. On an older group 7 C4 Cactus the samples ran from £547 a year at age 50 to £1,025 at age 20.
The C4 is a compact family hatchback, one class up from the C3 supermini, so its typical insurance groups sit higher — a mainstream 2021-on C4 rates groups 13–23 against the current C3’s group 23 top and much lower older cars. A bigger body, higher list price and more standard driver-assistance kit all push the average claim cost up. Finder’s all-versions figures reflect that gap: about £787 a year for the C4 versus roughly £673 for the C3.
Relatively, yes. The ë-C4 and ë-C4 X rate group 22 on most trims — group 21 on the entry Sense and group 23 on the top Max — which is at the upper end of the C4 range. The 50–54kWh battery is the reason: post-accident battery inspection or replacement makes EV claims dearer to settle, so the group sits above the petrol equivalents. A group 13–14 petrol You or Sense is the cheaper route if running costs allow.
Among current cars, the 1.2 PureTech petrol in You or Sense trim (groups 13–14) is the cheapest new C4 to cover. Go older and the 2014–2018 C4 Cactus with the 1.2 PureTech 82 engine rates groups 7–8 — the lowest of any C4 — where Finder’s over-50 sample quote was about £547 a year. The Hybrid, diesel and electric versions all rate higher, so there is no cheap pick among the top trims.
An older Cactus, yes; a new one, less so. A group 7–8 C4 Cactus is a sensible first-car profile — low power, low value, cheap parts — and Finder’s age-20 sample of £1,025 a year on a group 7 car, while not cheap, beats what many teenagers pay, and a telematics (black box) policy usually cuts it further. A brand-new group 22–23 Hybrid or ë-C4 is a much harder sell for a first policy.
Slightly dearer, on average. Finder’s all-versions C4 figure of about £787 a year sits roughly 9% above the ~£719 UK average quoted comprehensive premium in the Confused.com Price Index (June 2026). Note that the ABI’s ~£566 figure measures premiums actually paid, which is a different basis — the C4 comparison here uses quoted data against quoted data. Picking a lower-group version pulls the C4 back below the average.
Both, in the wrong direction. Finder’s C4 monthly figure of £70.51 equates to roughly £846 a year — about 7% more than the £787 annual price — because instalments carry interest. Modifications, from alloys to remaps, must be declared and almost always raise the premium on a car whose group rating assumes standard, cheap-to-repair parts; an undeclared modification can void a claim entirely.
